Nestor Luján: Inspiration and History of our "Menú Barcelona"
At this point, there are very few gastronomy enthusiasts who are not familiar with the work of Nèstor Luján. A journalist and writer, but above all a gastronome, Luján has been one of the great voices of the 20th century when it comes to matters of food. His exquisite palate, immersive and precise prose, and a unique perspective that, like all great writers, has always gone beyond gastronomy, are the hallmarks of an author who managed to condense all his knowledge into a great work: "Vint segles de cuina a Barcelona" (Twenty Centuries of Cuisine in Barcelona). It is a historical essay sprinkled with anecdotes that traces the evolution of different iconic restaurants in the Catalan capital, all of which are fundamental to understanding the history of a city with an exceptional gastronomic heritage.
With the aim of paying tribute to the work of Nèstor Luján, specifically "Vint segles de cuina a Barcelona," Restaurant Windsor has launched a very special menu: "Menú Barcelona. Cuina catalana del segle XX" (Barcelona Menu. Catalan Cuisine of the 20th Century). It features some of the recipes found within the pages of the book, all of which are living history of a city in constant motion. These dishes that have marked an era have now been reinterpreted by our kitchen team, adapting them to the prevailing trends of the 21st century.
Among the appetizers, you will find the lobster with tartar sauce from the Hotel Ritz, the duck a l'orange from Cau Ferrat, and a typical recipe from popular cuisine: the traditional thyme soup. As for the main courses, there are also typical dishes from popular Barcelona cuisine, such as cod with potatoes and aioli or lamb with sweet samfaina. The proposal is completed with the legendary Rossini cannelloni from Maison Doree. And for dessert, the menu includes the not-to-be-missed Crêpe Suzette from Restaurant Glacier, followed by some entertainment, accompanied by Barcelona's chocolate tiles known as "panots" and an assortment of traditional wafer cookies called "neules."
Because at Restaurant Windsor, we know that there are countless ways to get to know Barcelona, a myriad of perspectives from which to contemplate this multifaceted city, and millions of layers to discover that make it a consistently fascinating and surprising destination.
And one of these ways is undoubtedly savoring it bite by bite. Enjoy the Menú Barcelona!
